Superman is to kryptonite as I am to directions. Through the years I’ve gotten a bit better, but I’m pretty sure that GPS systems were a gift from a future version of myself. Regardless, one of my favorite activities is getting horribly lost then somehow figuring out my way back—so today’s activity was right up my alley.
This morning Vernon split us up into small teams (generally we were with the people we’ll be commuting with to work) and then gave us an a list of instructions cumulating with us buying him an item (a soda, a samosa, etc) from specific locations around town. It’s a race! It’s a race! [snore]*
My group of fellow Christel Housers were assigned to figure out the Jammie Shuttle system which takes you to and fro the different parts of the UCT campus.

We left the gate optimistic & confident and then were hit with the largest hurdle of the day, where on earth is our Jammie stop?! We crossed some streets Frogger style, scanning the roads for the easily identifiable blue buses, asked a few gas-station attendants for directions, walked uncertainly for a while in the rain and finally chased one down, only to realize it was stopping a few yards further anyway. Once on the Jammie it was smooth sailing. We took potentially the most scenic commute in the world and we met this nice Engineering major who told us about Sea Point, the general Hiddingh campus area and how sweet the metric system is.
We followed the directions to Long Street Café and had a lovely lunch, got Vernon his Appletizer, and did some window shopping before returning home through a sudden and potent rain storm with a new found confidence in our navigational abilities.
I had a close friend in high-school who was really into making graphs about our travels and such, and I plan to carry on the tradition in his spirit, so here goes:

Directions, schmirections - not all those who wander are lost.
